Synopsis

Synopsis:
"Rated Z" is a story about a small-town movie theater that is attacked by zombies the morning of a big movie release. It follows the various employees and guests as they try to survive using only the supplies at the theater as weapons and food. It is part "Shaun of the Dead" and part "Clerks" as the book mocks both the zombie genre and the dull life of a theater worker.

More doodles and designs...

Just playing around with the looks of the characters and trying to get a feel for how fast I can draw these guys...

This is a shot of the cast... I drew them a LOT bigger than I usually draw the characters, so they are a bit sloppy. I also haven't colored them in or added much detail...

From Left to Right: Un-named Slacker Usher, Un-Named Ticket-Taker Girl, Un-Named Projectionist, Tim, Katie, Un-Named Security Guard, Un-Named Nerd Kid

As you can see, Jon and I haven't quite named all the characters yet. We also haven't quite nailed down the final looks on the other heroes. But this is the basic cast of characters, give or take. There's also a manager and some other guests that will basically be people needing saving...

Up next is a shot of Tim that I tested coloring on. Not sure how much "color" is going to be in the design of the book, but the book will be in black and white with shades of gray. So, it's really a matter of how much shading I want to do with my gray pens...

This is a quick and sloppy sketch of a screaming zombie. I'm only including it because it's interesting to note the possible ways to go with how his hands are drawn. On the one (right) hand, you have a more detailed and realistic look (though still sloppy), and on the other (left) hand, you have a hand that is more cartoony and quick (intentionally sloppy). Not sure what I want to go with. Also, I drew this zombie a bit bigger than usual, allowing for more detail. I'm also unsure about lettering. Should I use a computer to digitally write the words, or should I write them by hand to make it look a bit more low-budget (like the movies we'll be mocking).

Last is two shots of the same zombie, both with coloring and without. This was also drawn a bit bigger than usual. This will probably end up being my basic scale, so that I can have more detail. Anyway, trying out different looks for different zombies. Not sure how many different styles there will be, but I would really like to make them all a bit different from one another. I also would like some MAIN zombies to basically be lead antagonists. Zombies that cause a lot of damage or kill a main character or live through the whole story. Not sure what I'm going with on any of that, though.

Designs

Here are a few designs to tide you over until I can start posting actual pages of the book. These are all basic sketches and may or may not differ from the final designs.

First up is Tim. Tim is the protagonist in the book. He also serves as the narrator for the story. Here's Tim in his work clothes AFTER the zombie outbreak. He has removed his vest and his shirt is un-tucked. This is his primary look throughout the story.

Here is Tim as he walks to work in his street clothes, completely unaware of the fact that he is about to have the most interesting day of his life. Or at least of his career at the theater...

Here is Katie, Tim's love interest. She is a guest at the theater when it is attacked. Katie starts out as a damsel in distress, but by the end of the book she is saving Tim. I'm still not sure what she'll be wearing when the outbreak happens, but considering that it takes place during the summer, a nice summer dress just might do it. She will definitely have a change of clothes by the end.

Here's one of the many zombies that is roaming the theater. Going to be a pain drawing a ton of these, but this specific zombie I have drawn several times during each stage of development. The "Disney" zombie...

The theater houses a small arcade. Here's a drawing of one of the arcade games. There will be a couple featured in the story, and some will serve as jokes. One will be "Lord of the Flies: The Game"...

And here's the basic design for the theater itself. This is a very rough sketch. Just trying to figure out exactly how I want it to look. It also has no name yet. At one point Jon suggested that we put the title and credits on the marquee for the first issue, which makes a ton of sense, so that's why in the sketch it says "Rated Z"... That is NOT the name of a movie or the theater...

And... As a bonus, I have included a sketch/design of myself. This might accompany an "about the creators" section on the website or something... I might also put Jon and myself into the book as an "Easter Egg," but I'm not sure. I still haven't gotten around to designing Jon in the book's style...
